Power Plant Specialist

Pay Range: $43.00-$45.00/hour
Job Description:
A leading energy services provider is seeking a Power Plant Specialist to join the operations team at the Tufts University Central Energy Plant (CEP) in Medford, Massachusetts. This position plays a vital role in maintaining plant safety, compliance, and operational reliability. Reporting to the Regional Manager, the Power Plant Specialist will support daily operations, coordinate maintenance activities, and ensure adherence to regulatory standards.
Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Promote a strong safety culture by encouraging continuous improvement and ensuring all work follows safety protocols.
- Lead and support incident reporting, investigation, and resolution efforts.
- Operate and maintain plant systems in compliance with all environmental and regulatory permits.
- Execute preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and plant efficiency.
- Oversee and coordinate contractors and vendors during maintenance and repair activities.
- Manage and document planned maintenance outages and ensure proper scheduling and follow-up.
- Identify and recommend improvements to enhance safety, system reliability, and performance.
- Respond to plant alarms, equipment failures, and emergency situations outside of standard working hours as needed.
- Assist in budgeting and cost control efforts, identifying opportunities for savings without compromising safety or plant output.
- Maintain training records and operator qualification programs; ensure operational procedures are current and effective.
- Handle procurement of materials, approve vendor invoices, and coordinate timely deliveries.
- Foster productive relationships with facility stakeholders and support regular reporting and special projects.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in industrial operations and maintenance, preferably within a utility, central plant, or power generation environment.
- Hands-on experience with boilers, district steam heating systems, chilled water production, and power generation equipment.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting system drawings, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Technical training through military service, trade school, or a certified industrial training program.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, energy systems, or a related technical field.
- Military or merchant marine experience in energy or mechanical systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Experience with CMMS software, especially Maximo.
