Job Description:
The EHS Manager plays a critical role in supporting the implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of the organization’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) program. This position actively champions the organization’s commitment to safety and is expected to consistently demonstrate its core values. The EHS Manager embraces a servant-leader mindset, leading by example and through service, while also serving as a mentor to EHS Coordinators and junior EHS Managers.
In this role, the EHS Manager conducts and coordinates project audits, assists in the development of site-specific EHS and Safety & Health Plans, attends and supports project safety meetings, delivers training, and facilitates incident investigations. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential, as the EHS Manager is responsible for coaching, training, and engaging employees at all levels to ensure compliance with safety policies, procedures, and best practices.
The position also requires a working knowledge of basic industrial hygiene principles, including the ability to recommend appropriate sampling and monitoring methods based on project needs. Additional responsibilities include completing permits and executing related duties in alignment with organizational EHS policies, client requirements, and contractual obligations. The EHS Manager contributes to the development of consistent best practices, identifies trends, proposes new or revised policies, and creates training materials. This role reports directly to the Senior EHS Manager.
The Senior EHS Manager reports to the Corporate EHS Director and, in their absence, serves as the Assistant or Deputy EHS Director. In this capacity, the Senior EHS Manager assumes oversight responsibility for the EHS team supporting construction operations and leads the advancement of EHS policies and programs across construction projects. This role is expected to build strong, collaborative relationships with executive leadership, including Vice Presidents and Directors, to drive consistent adherence to EHS policies and procedures. All EHS Managers and Coordinators supporting construction operations report to the Senior EHS Manager.
Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a visible safety leader, supporting project teams with practical, field-driven EHS guidance.
- Lead the development, implementation, and enforcement of site-specific EHS plans, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct project audits, inspections, and evaluations to ensure compliance and program effectiveness.
- Collaborate with project leadership to identify hazards, mitigate risk, and implement best practices.
- Lead and support incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions with a prevention-focused approach.
- Deliver effective safety training, orientations, and toolbox talks across a range of topics and environments.
- Mentor and support EHS Coordinators and junior EHS Managers to promote consistency and professional development.
- Analyze leading and lagging safety indicators to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
- Apply working knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, including air monitoring, sampling, and data logging.
- Support the development of standardized best practices, training materials, and policy enhancements.
- Communicate project conditions, risks, and performance clearly to project teams and corporate EHS leadership.
- Provide EHS support during construction activities including system checkout, commissioning, and startup as required.
Required General Qualifications:
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization; above-average emotional intelligence is essential.
- Willingness to work overtime as required based on project demands.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (required).
- Demonstrated experience managing EHS programs within industrial, construction, maintenance, electrical, mechanical, or similar environments.
- Completion of EHS-related coursework, formal training, or college-level education (degree preferred but not required unless otherwise specified).
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR) and ability to operate company vehicles to travel to project sites.
Required Experience & Certification Qualifications (per level):
EHS Manager I
- Minimum 7 years of EHS experience in construction or industrial environments.
- OSHA 500 – Authorized Outreach Trainer certification (required).
- Minimum 1 year of management and oversight experience, including training and supervision of direct reports.
- CHST and/or CSP certification (required).
EHS Manager II
- Minimum 8 years of progressive EHS experience.
- OSHA 500 – Authorized Outreach Trainer certification (required).
- Minimum 3 years of management and oversight experience, including training and supervision of direct reports.
- CHST and/or CSP certification (required).
Senior EHS Manager
- Minimum 10 years of progressive EHS leadership experience.
- OSHA 500 – Authorized Outreach Trainer certification (required).
- Minimum 5 years of management and oversight experience, including leadership of EHS teams.
- CHST and/or CSP certification (required).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Leadership development or supervisory training programs.
- Advanced OSHA coursework related to construction and industrial safety.
- Training or certification aligned with EM 385-1-1 safety requirements.
- MSHA-related training or certifications.
- NFPA 70E training or certification with demonstrated electrical safety knowledge.
- Additional EHS certifications supporting regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.
