Job Title: Technical Writer (Manufacturing)
Location: Aiken, SC
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 1st Shift
Pay Range: $34-38/HR
Job Description:
Our client is seeking a detail-oriented Technical Writer / Editor to support manufacturing operations by developing clear, accurate, and standardized work instructions for CNC machining and welding processes. This position serves as a critical link between Engineering and Production, ensuring manufacturing personnel have the documentation needed to safely and consistently produce high-quality products.
This is a highly collaborative, hands-on role where you’ll spend significant time on the manufacturing floor working alongside engineers, machinists, welders, and production personnel to observe processes, document best practices, and develop comprehensive manufacturing documentation. Your work will directly support operational efficiency, reduce production variability and scrap, and help drive continuous improvement across manufacturing operations.
Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, edit, and maintain detailed manufacturing work instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), process routings, and other technical documentation supporting CNC machining and welding operations.
- Partner closely with manufacturing engineers, production supervisors, machinists, and welders to observe manufacturing processes and accurately document standardized work methods.
- Translate complex engineering drawings, specifications, and manufacturing requirements into clear, concise, step-by-step instructions for production personnel.
- Create technical illustrations, visual aids, callouts, and process diagrams utilizing 3D CAD models and engineering documentation.
- Validate manufacturing workflows on the production floor to ensure work instructions accurately reflect current manufacturing processes and best practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing documentation by incorporating standardized processes and error-proofing (Poka-Yoke) methodologies to reduce defects and improve repeatability.
- Integrate quality inspection checkpoints and verification requirements into manufacturing documentation to support product quality and compliance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement engineering changes and maintain documentation accuracy throughout the product lifecycle.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by refining documentation that enhances manufacturing consistency, safety, productivity, and operational excellence.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven experience developing manufacturing work instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), process routings, or similar technical documentation within a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience supporting CNC machining, welding, fabrication, or other industrial manufacturing processes.
- Strong technical writing skills with the ability to transform complex engineering concepts into clear, user-friendly production documentation.
- Experience collaborating with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and production teams in a cross-functional environment.
- Familiarity with quality control processes and incorporating inspection requirements into manufacturing documentation.
- Experience utilizing 3D CAD software to create technical illustrations, visual references, and manufacturing documentation.
- Strong understanding of machining and welding fixtures, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to analyze manufacturing workflows, identify process improvement opportunities, and implement standardized, error-proof manufacturing practices.
- Excellent organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple departments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting aerospace, defense, heavy manufacturing, or precision machining environments.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, or Poka-Yoke (error-proofing) methodologies.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, and manufacturing specifications.
