Component Design Engineer (Turbo Machinery)
Indianapolis, IN
Pay Range: $47.50-$53.50/hour
Job Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer with extensive gas turbine and aerospace design experience to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and validating complex mechanical designs for turbomachinery components that meet stringent aerospace functional, performance, and manufacturability standards. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, proven hands-on experience with component design and validation, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and program stakeholders.
Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Development
- Develop complex engineering solutions for gas turbine turbomachinery components, ensuring compliance with functional, physical, and performance requirements.
- Create detailed component design definitions, including 2D drawings and/or model-based definitions, aligned with system and customer interface requirements.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and establish dimensional tolerance stacks to ensure manufacturability and quality compliance.
- Ensure designs are optimized for cost-effective and robust manufacturing processes.
Validation & Verification
- Develop, approve, and execute validation and verification plans to confirm design compliance with performance and reliability requirements.
- Participate in design reviews, test planning, and data analysis to validate hardware performance and durability.
Manufacturing & Supply Chain Support
- Provide engineering support throughout the manufacturing and assembly process, ensuring conforming hardware production.
- Review and approve supplier documentation, including process certifications and test results.
- Assess non-conforming hardware and supplier change proposals, collaborating on corrective actions as needed.
Technical Support & Problem Solving
- Support root cause and corrective action (RCCA) activities for in-service and developmental hardware issues.
- Address service and aftermarket engineering concerns, providing timely technical resolutions and design updates as necessary.
- Present and defend design concepts and engineering analyses to program leadership, technical stakeholders, and customers.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
- 5+ years of professional engineering experience, preferably in the aerospace or turbomachinery industry.
- Direct experience in gas turbine design, development, or analysis.
- Strong proficiency in CAD modeling, detailed drawing creation, and GD&T application.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and component integration for rotating machinery.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience with a gas turbine OEM or Tier-1 aerospace supplier.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), or aero-mechanical performance analysis.
- Knowledge of AS9100, FAA, or DoD aerospace compliance standards.
- Advanced degree (MS) in a related field and/or professional engineering certification (PE).
