Field Technician
Brooklyn & Coney Island, NY
Pay Range: $28.00-$38.00/hour
Job Description:
Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, modifications, and repairs on rail cars during final assembly and field operations.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, piping diagrams, mechanical drawings, and technical manuals to diagnose and resolve issues.
- Conduct functional and safety testing across multiple systems, including: HVAC, Braking systems, Propulsion systems, Trainline and communication systems, Signage and control systems, Toilet and auxiliary systems, Automatic Train Control (ATC) systems
- Execute specialized test procedures such as Hipotential, Wiring Continuity, Pneumatic Leakage, Burn-in, Dynamic, and general functional tests.
- Operate standard and advanced diagnostic tools, including multi-meters, oscilloscopes, chart recorders, network analyzers, and PC-based test equipment.
- Document all work performed, including test results, discrepancies, and corrective actions, in accordance with reporting and quality standards.
- Lead assignments in the field, providing guidance and direction to other technicians as required.
- Support engineering teams with prototype and validation testing when needed.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers, suppliers, and internal teams regarding technical findings and corrective actions.
- Work independently with minimal supervision, escalating to vendors, engineering, or supervisors only when necessary.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school or associate degree in engineering/technology preferred.
- Prior hands-on experience in electrical or mechanical testing and troubleshooting.
- Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting schematics, blueprints, and mechanical diagrams.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
- Proficiency with Portable Test Equipment (PTE) and ability to download, interpret, and analyze data.
- Basic computer proficiency, including MS Office and industry-specific software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare accurate technical documentation and reports.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to lead tasks, mentor junior technicians, and work independently.
- Comfortable working under pressure and meeting deadlines in fast-paced environments.
- Familiarity with both English and Metric measurement systems.
